Black Mambas

Black mambas live in Africa. They are scary. They don’t have the deadliest venom of any snake, (that is the Inland Taipan) they haven’t killed the most people, (that is the saw scaled viper) but it’s still very deadly and it always kills in 6 hours if the person doesn’t get treatment and it bites multiple times. That’s very scary, and they are aggressive and they can slither along at 20 km/h (12.5 mph). Black Mambas get their name from its black throat and black tongue, which it shows when it’s angry.

According to 100 most feared creatures by Anna Claybourne, the most feared animal is the black mamba, but the mosquito is obviously WAY more deadly because they spread malaria and other deadly diseases. In the wild, the black mamba only lives about 11 years, but in captivity it can live 20 years. Their scientific name is Dendroaspis polylepis.

Black mambas eat rats, mice, squirrels, and birds but they also eat other snakes like the forest cobra.

Here are some facts about Black Mambas:

  • Black mamba fangs are 6.5 millimeters long and have 12 to 20 drops of venom
  • Black Mambas are more aggressive than other venomous snakes
  • Black Mambas are the most feared snake in Africa
  • Most Black Mamba bites happen in the upper body

Their scientific name is panthera uncia but they’re also called ghost cats because they’re super rare. They can run at 64km/h and they can jump 50 feet! Snow leopards can’t roar, so they mark territory by rubbing scents on rocks, by peeing or by scratching on rocks. They can live 22 years in captivity, but in the wild they only live 10 to 12 years.
